“General Tips for Foot Care ”

If you have diabetes you are more prone to foot problems, because the disease can damage your blood vessels and nerves. This, in turn, may make you less able to sense injury or pressure on your foot. You may not notice foot injury until severe infection develops. Diabetes also alters the immune system, decreasing the body's ability to fight infection. Small infections may rapidly progress to death of the skin and other tissues (necrosis), which may require amputation of the affected limb to save the patient's life. Foot problems can be prevented in part with improved blood sugar control.

If you have diabetes, you are at higher risk for developing foot problems if you:

1 - Have had diabetes for more than 10 years
2 - Are male
3 - Have poor glucose control
4 - Have eyes, kidneys, or heart problems

All diabetics should get regular foot exams -- at least every year -- by their health care provider and should learn whether they have nerve damage. To prevent injury to the feet when you have diabetes, you should adopt a DAILY routine of checking and caring for your feet, especially if you already have known nerve or blood vessel damage or current foot problems.

Follow the instructions below.

Inspect your feet regularly. Pay attention to changes in color and temperature. Look for thick or discolored nails (a sign of developing fungus), and check for cracks or cuts in the skin. Peeling or scaling on the soles of feet could indicate Athlete`s foot. Any growth on the foot is not considered normal. For examination of Sole of feet use mirror.

Wash your feet regularly (Twice a day), especially between the toes,and be sure to dry them completely.

Trim toenails straight across, but not too short. Be careful not to cut nails in corners or on the sides; it can lead to ingrown toenails. Persons with diabetes & poor circulation should not treat their own feet because they are more prone to infection.

Make sure that your shoes fit properly.

Select and wear the right shoe for the activity that you are engaged in (i.e. running shoes for running).

Alternate shoes - don`t wear the same pair of shoes every day.

Avoid walking barefooted, not even in bathroom. Your feet will be more prone to injury and infection.

Be cautious when using home remedies for foot ailments. Self-treatment can often turn a minor problem into a major one

Diabetic Foot :  Do’s & Don’ts


Wash your feet daily, at least twice a day. Dry interdigital areas nicely, use talcum powder. Lubricate your entire foot if your skin is dry, but avoid putting cream between toes.

Examine your feet daily for redness, warmth, blisters, ulcers, scratches, cuts and nail problems from shoes or other sources. Look at the bottoms and between toes. Use a mirror or have someone else look for you. If you find any signs of “Diabetic Foot”, contact us

In the winter, wear warm socks and protective footwear. Avoid getting your feet wet in the snow and rain and avoid letting your toes get cold.

Cut your toenails straight.

Go to your doctor regularly & keep your Sugar, Blood pressure & Cholesterol under control.
Get your complete feet examination by Foot specialist, at least once a year.

Do not use ‘Corn Cap'

Never walk barefoot, neither indoors nor out.

Do not file down, remove or shave calluses or corns yourself.

Do not use any chemicals or strong antiseptic solutions on your feet. Iodine, salicylic acid, corn/callus removers are dangerous.

Do not wear stockings or socks with tight elastic backs and do not use garters. Do not wear any socks with holes. Always wear shoes with socks.

Don’t use any tape or sticky products such as corn plasters on your feet. They can rip your skin.

Never keep feet near any hot objects like heaters, heating pads, hot water bottle, electric blankets, radiators & fireplaces. You can burn your feet without knowing it. Estimate with your elbow or bath thermometer (you can ask any relation of you for checking the temperature).

Do not wear shoes or sandals which are narrow at toes & high heel.

Don’t wear synthetic or “Nylon” socks.

Do not smoke. It decreases the blood supply to your feet. Try to avoid alcohol.
